At Mirikai, we believe that with the right care and support, people can change their lives
Live-in and recover
At Burleigh on the sunny Gold Coast, Mirikai is offering a renewed specialist residential alcohol and drug program, delivered over six-week cycles, helping people aged 18 to 35. While staying with us, you will undertake an evidence-based, flexible program, which provides strategies to help you:
- reduce substance use
- manage life challenges
- develop goals
- and prevent relapse, towards supporting lives free from the harms of drugs or alcohol.
Mirikai’s local Aboriginal meaning is “a place of peace”, and we acknowledge the traditional owners of its land, paying respects to local Elders, past and present…
As soon as you make contact with us, you will be able to access support, as you can see one of our counsellors in the community. This free counselling can help you prepare for entering our live-in program.
You will be welcomed and settled in, before meeting your treatment facilitator who is honoured to work with you and guide you through the program. With patience and curiosity, your facilitator will seek to understand your needs and treatment goals and work with you to tailor a plan to help get your life back in line with your potential.
We believe in delivering a program of respect that you can feel proud to be part of. Our care is holistic, tailored to individual needs and education-based. The program takes a harm-minimisation approach and applies a community environment of learning and support as well as individual counselling as required.
At the end of six weeks, we encourage you to celebrate, not just graduate. We now work with you to support the steps needed to achieve independent living in the community. This may require a short stay in our transitional accommodation. On leaving, the support can continue as you can access free counselling in the community. People can stay at Mirikai longer than the six weeks, if required.
Our friendly and professional team has a wide range of life experience and qualifications and is made up of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and counsellors. We can help you access Centrelink and other government, professional and medical services if required.
We accept referrals but you don’t need to present one. Just give us a call on 1300 727 957 and we will have a chat to you to determine your needs. We accept referrals from other health professionals, services and community and government organisations.
You need to be aged between 18 and 35 to apply.
Mirikai is located at 191 West Burleigh Road, Burleigh Heads, on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Buses stop nearby. We can provide you with the latest bus timetables if required.

WHAT IS RESIDENTIAL REHABILITATION?
Residential treatment is based on the principle that a residential setting free of alcohol and non-prescribed drugs provides a safe environment in which to address the underlying causes of dependence.
We offer a 24-hour, staffed, residential treatment program, inclusive of intensive, structured and evidence-based interventions after withdrawal from alcohol or drugs of dependence. Our residential treatment is complemented by a full package of care with pre and post counselling and support services available.
IS THIS A DETOX PROGRAM?
No. Mirikai is not a detoxification facility. People come to our program drug free (other than prescribed medications) and alcohol free. Many residents will have had to participate in a detox program provided by another service before they will be accepted into our program.
DO I HAVE TO BE DRUG FREE TO BE IN THE PROGRAM?
Yes. You need to be free from alcohol and illegal drugs to participate in our program.
CAN MY CHILDREN OR FAMILY STAY WITH ME OR VISIT?
Mirikai does not allow parents in the program to have their children living with them.
However, the program offers support for family relationships and contact with children and other immediate family members is encouraged.
CAN I ACCESS OTHER SUPPORT SERVICES DURING MY STAY?
Residents can access other treatment programs that we offer, such as parenting programs, support groups and counselling for couples or families.
Our program works closely with other organisations such as mental health services, dentists, sexual health services, hospitals, Centrelink and legal services to meet each resident’s range of specific needs.
Our residents can also access Banjara – a general medical practice, which includes specialist health services. Banjara is one of our health services and is located on the same site as Mirikai.
HOW CAN I GET INTO THE PROGRAM?
First you need to make contact with Mirikai by calling 1300 727 957. Our intake officer can provide information about our program and schedule a time for an assessment. Our intake officer will ask a series of questions to understand more about you, your dependence history and which program would best suit you. They will assess your eligibility for our program and discuss the next steps.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
You are required to pay some money towards your stay, which depends on the type of benefit or payment you receive from Centrelink.
Usually, the cost amounts to 85 per cent of your Centrelink benefit.
ARE THE SERVICES CONFIDENTIAL?
Yes. Information collected by Lives Lived Well is confidential.
